10 Ways to Protect your Practise from a Break In

The number of burglaries at Optician premises is hitting the headlines more frequently, but it’s not just the expensive testing equipment that the thieves are targeting, it’s the designer frames too.

Here are ten ways to help protect your Optician’s business:

Locks and Padlocks.  All external entrances and internal security doors should be fitted with double-cylinder deadbolts. If you use padlocks, ensure they are made of hardened steel mounted on bolted hasps.

Doors. All external entrances, internal security doors and door jambs should be a solid metal construction. To prevent doors being removed the exposed hinges should be pinned.

Windows. Windows should have security locks. In addition windows could have: – burglar-resistant glass treatments, glass break sensors, or heavy metal window grates.

Lights. The inside and the outside of your premises should be well-lit. External lights should have vandal-proof covers over the lights.

Alarm System. Use a licensed alarm company with a central monitoring station to install an alarm system and place the company stickers in a prominent place to advertise that your premises are alarmed. Check the alarm system daily.

Cash Register. Keep the cash register so it is visible from outside the building.

Safe/Strongbox.  It must be securely fixed to the floor, fireproof and burglar-resistant. It is also a good idea to have it visible and left open when it is empty. However, all valuables must be locked away when the business is closed. The combination should be changed regularly, particularly when a member of staff, who knows the combination, leaves your employment.

Building Exterior. All exterior openings should be securely locked. Keep all exterior openings clearly visible by removing trees or large shrubs that are close to the building, and to prevent intruders climbing to upper windows and the roof keep rubbish bins and vehicles away from the building.

Perimeter Fences. This needs to be strong enough to keep intruders out, but still allow good visibility to your neighbours or the police. For example vertical iron bar or mesh vinyl-coated chain link.

Key Controls & ID Numbers. Restrict the number of employees who have keys. Code all keys, keep them securely locked when not in use, and do not allow employees to make duplicates. Change locks whenever you suspect that key security has been compromised. Marking equipment with ID numbers and keeping a record of serial numbers on all equipment may also help with the recovery of stolen items.
