60% of Small Businesses Experience Cyber Breaches!

We are constantly hearing on the TV or reading in the newspaper about big companies like TalkTalk, V-Tech and more recently pub chain JD Wetherspoon, falling victim to security breaches and cyber hacking, but are small business like Opticians under threat too? Unfortunately the answer is yes!

According to Government statistics during 2014, 60% of small businesses experienced a cyber breach with an average cost for the worst breaches between £65,000- £115,000.

Like many small businesses you have worked hard to establish a successful Opticians practice and over the years have probably introduced a range of IT equipment to enhance your business and use the internet to advertise.

But with all the benefits that the internet can bring, there are also risks.

Every day in the UK cyber attackers are targeting companies large and small to obtain information about their business. Attackers are most likely to be cyber criminals but they could also be business competitors or former employees.

 So…

What is at risk?

  • Your money e.g.  your financial details
  • Your information e.g. client lists and customers financial details
  • Your reputation
  • Your IT equipment
  • Your IT based services

What can you do?

It is increasingly important to manage these risks and protect your business against online threats by putting some simple measures in place. Here are just a few to consider…

  • Create a culture of cyber security. – Download software and app updates as soon as they appear. Use strong passwords, delete suspicious emails and always use anti-virus software.
  • Establish a management strategy. -  Look at you own business and carry out a risk assessment. Implement any changes you need to put in place and review your action plan regularly.
