Prepare Your Practise For Flooding
Flooding is a natural process that often happens with little warning.
Earlier this year the UK saw the wettest winter in records since 1910. It has recently been reported that some of the damage caused by the floods could have been prevented if the UK had implemented a clearer prevention strategy.
Severe flooding in the UK is not unusual, and business owners can be left faced with the prospect of damaged property, affected employees, and loss of revenue.
As an optician, you will be aware that your business premises need to be protected, especially if your practise is located in an area prone to flooding.
We bring you our top tips for making a business flood plan, and ensuring everyone within the company knows what needs to be done to protect the practise, equipment and each other.
Risk
Start by establishing how high the risk of flooding is to your business. It is thought that around 185,000 commercial properties are at risk of flooding in England and Wales. The Environment Agency offers a free postcode search, so you can quickly establish whether your business is in an area prone to flooding.
Insurance
Flood damage can be costly to your business. Average losses from a flood are said to be around £28,000 so make sure you have adequate insurance. Ensure you keep your documents in a safe and memorable location so you can make a claim as soon as possible. Create an inventory of major business items and take photographic/video evidence of any damage as soon as possible in case you need to make a claim.
Preparation
Always assume the worst-case scenario so your business is prepared for any eventuality.
According to the Environment Agency, businesses can save up to 90% on the cost of lost stock and equipment simply by forming a flood plan. You may want to include things like:
- Procurement of flood barriers or other flood protection equipment
- Backing up important information and storing it in a safe place
- Raising vital items above floor level
- Moving items to another site/a higher level in the premises
- Covering items in protective materials
Remember to always put your safety first, and not to return to the shop until you know it is completely safe.
Follow these steps, and always keep your customers in the loop about the opening of the practise and your business should have no problem recovering from a flood.
