Summer Season Jeopardies

For many business owners, the winter months are often associated with a number of risks.

From extreme low temperatures to wind storms, snow, ice, and freezing conditions, most of us will be wary of the potential risks associated with the colder months and as a result, let our guard down when the summer comes back around.

However, summer risks are just as common although they often seem to attract less attention!

Take a moment to think about some of these common summertime risks:

  • Fire caused by deliberate/accidental arson
  • Fires and explosions caused by extremely high temperatures (including electrical)
  • Summer season stock damage (resulting in a significant loss of income)
  • Floods
  • Open windows

When it comes to preventing a summertime catastrophe, preparation is key and a little forward thinking can help prevent damage to your practise, machinery, stock and future income.

Consider the following…

  • Ensure dry and combustible materials are stored safely, tidily and separated from property
  • Flammable/explosive materials are controlled and stored separately
  • Manage worker conditions in sunny and extreme high temperature conditions

A recent example of a major incident this summer was the explosion and subsequent fire at a wood factory in Bosley, Cheshire.

The fire has had a devastating effect on that business and its employees, leaving two dead and many others injured.

It’s also worth mentioning that this incident reaches far beyond the confines of this business and it’s premises to its suppliers, customers and the local economy.

When it comes to summer season jeopardies, it is the responsibility of all business owners and their workforce to be aware of the dangers and take all reasonable steps to keep the business and each other safe.

If you’re concerned about risk to your opticians practise, it could be a costly mistake if you don’t have appropriate insurance in place.
