Why is Cyber Security Important for Opticians?
What is cybercrime?
The term ‘cybercrime’ refers to illegal activities which make use of computers or online systems to make a financial profit. This can include financial crime such as fraud and phishing, as well as the use of computer technology to access personal details and confidential information.
Will it affect me?
Recent research conducted by Hiscox revealed that only 22% of SME’s are concerned about e-risks and cyber crime. If you’re an independent opticians practise then you should fall into this percentage.
The worryingly small figure demonstrates the attitude that many small businesses have towards cyber crime – ‘it won’t happen to me.’ While it’s understandable to think that no one would be interested in targeting a small, high street business, unfortunately this isn’t the case.
In fact, being a small business can make you a much easier target for a hacker. There is a growing criminal market for data, and cyber criminals aren’t just after your company records, they’re after your client’s too.
Demand for logins, passwords, bank details, and medical records now means that opticians are increasingly vulnerable to a breach.
While we speak to many opticians who want to ensure their practise and equipment stays protected from a security breach, most people don’t consider protecting their practise from cyber-crime, which is not covered by our traditional insurance policies.
Laptops, smartphones and tablets are under constant threat of attack from cyber criminals who are seeking to break into your system and steal any information they can find.
How can I protect my practise?
The truth is, no business is completely safe and unless you have taken out Cyber Security insurance for your practise, it’s unlikely that you will be protected against cybercrime.
When it comes to staying cyber secure, we would advise you seek professional advice to find the best cover for you. At Infocus Opticians Insurance we know the types of risks associated with your business. You can be assured that we listen to your requirements and make sure you’re covered for the things that matter.
